Does Your Skin Need Hyaluronic Acid?

Hyaluronic acid is the hottest ingredient in skincare right now—but how well does it actually work as a moisturizer and wrinkle-plumper?

Beauty editors, skincare companies and anti-aging aficionados are having a serious love affair with hyaluronic acid. It is everywhere: not just as the main ingredient in injectable fillers but also in topical serums, lotions, creams and masques; it’s making its way into foundation, primer, blush and lipstick, too.

What is hyaluronic acid? Hyaluronic acid (which also goes by the names hyaluronan or hyaluronate) is not an acid in the same sense as popular ones like salicylic or glycolic, which exfoliate away dead skin cells. Hyaluronic acid doesn’t do that at all. As a naturally-occurring polysaccharide found in the human body, it acts as a cushioning and lubrication agent for our joints, nerves, hair, skin and eyes.

It’s particularly important to skin appearance because about 50 percent of the body’s supply is located in the skin tissues, where the viscous, jelly-like substance helps keep it plump, soft and supple. Our ability to produce hyaluronic acid declines with age, which can lead to increased dryness, fine lines, wrinkles and loss of elasticity. Hyaluronic acid molecules’ unique ability to attract and retain more than 1,000 times their weight in water.

Why hyaluronic acid makes a great injectable filler. Popular fillers like Restylane and Juvéderm work like sponges once they’re injected, swelling up with water to create a plumper look Over time—anywhere from three to 12 months—the hyaluronic acid gets absorbed by the body and disappears. This is longer than collagen lasts; HA is also less likely to produce a reaction, since the body does not recognize it as a foreign substance. .

There is also some evidence that hyaluronic acid stimulates collagen production. It forms a barrier on the skin and gives a soft moisturizing effect that makes skin smoother

Although it gives you the sensation that your skin is “instantly” moist and hydrated, you are not getting any lipids or fats to really protect and provide lasting moisture. There are lots of discussions that it can be drying, but in our facial room here in Pagosa Springs, what we normally see is that it softens and restores healthy skin very quickly. Most clients need an additional moisturizer. So with our line of ultra low molecular weight hyaluronic acid products, we like to use another moisturizing step after. Lavish contains addition volumes of larger molecules of hyaluronic acid, but also contains raw shea butter, acai berry extract, passion fruit seed oil, calendula flower, and rice brain oil. This work in conjuction to help deeply moisturize with lasting lipids, vitamin content and trace minerals.

One great thing about HA is that it’s super-light and watery, which is a great benefit for anyone with acne-prone skin who is averse to creamy/oily moisturizers.

The most potent topical form is in a serum—to be applied on clean, bare and ideally damp (or even wet) skin as the first step in your skincare regimen. (The wetness will help it trap and lock in the most water.) Two of the highest-concentrations are Vivify Serum and Vivify Spritz from organic skin care maker Queen Bee.

Vivify Spritz and Serum. What is the difference?

vivify mist and serum Vivify is a high dose facial skin care product formulated with ultra low molecular weight of hyaluronic acid.  The new products called Lavish (moisturizer) and Vivify (plumper) are both breaking sales records for us at Queen Bee.  We wanted to explain why we created two different versions of Vivify.

Vivify Spritz versus Vivify Serum.  They are essentially the same thing.  There are a few small differences which is why we added them both to our facial skin care line.  If you haven’t tried these products yet, you can start with either one.  You apply them first on freshly cleaned skin.  (We have samples size of most of our products at www.QueenBeeSkin.com).

Vivify Serum is formulated with aloe as a binding agent.  The Aloe helps it penetrate even more quickly and deeply.  This is great for eye areas and targeting fine lines.  It allows you to put the serum exactly where you want it and it absorbs immediately.  This formulation is twice as strong as in the Vivify Spritz.

Vivify Spritz is easier for us to make in large volumes and the packaging is both easier to fill and less expensive.  This allows us to sell the product at $54 for 2 oz.  This compares to Vivify Serum which is $56 for half ounce.  The Vivify Spritz is great if you have larger areas of dry or damaged skin on your upper arms, legs or chest that you want to cover quickly.  We will also make a refill for this after it has been out a while.

They are both made with the same KEY ingredient the ultra low molecular weight of hyaluronic acid.  You can use both (which we do and recommend to most clients that have already noticed their skin getting better).  You can use either product.  Why ultra low weight sodium hyaluronate?  This is less than 5,000 dalton molecular weight which is one twentieth the size molecule of regular sodium hyaluronate.  That helps it sink in quicker and deeper so it plumps, restores fullness, soothes the skin, reduces redness, etc.  All the benefits of sodium hyaluronate in an even more powerful form.

It was Melting! Problem encounted with some bottles of Hydro: Primer.

sm_hydro primer 2014We encountered our first problem last month with our very popular Hydro: Primer hyaluronic acid serum.  It turned back into a watery state after bottling.  We didn’t know there was a problem until a customer alerted us.  We pulled all the inventory and made a fresh batch.  Sent out replacements to several customers and week later, again… it was melting!

We are so sorry if you were one of the customers that experienced this problem.  It is still perfectly safe and it works the same.  The texture though is not as appealing as it went from a kind a creamy viscose gel to what feels like plain water.

Here is what happened:

We completed several batches and had thought it was fresh lemon essential oil which can be very active.  We made a total of four batches that melted, but most of it never went into bottles.  We think this “melted” product went to a total of only about 20 customers.  After some more testing, it turns out the preservative we use called Leucadal was probably the cause. They made another version called “leucadal SF” that is from radishes and was probably the cause of the “melting”. We had ordered both not realizing that there a difference in their formulations that would alter our recipes and the jars look almost identical. The manufacturer of the hyaluronic acid is going to do some further tests for us to confirm, but we spent most of the day Monday with them going through our exact recipe etc.  As a result, we have also changed some internal systems for how we track different batches/lots of products made to make investigation easier in the future and to ensure that we are always sending our customers the best products we can make.

We have slightly changed the recipe/formula to include a tiny amount of methylcellulose which is plant fibers.  It is often sold as fiber supplement to eat.  Our is vegan and we use it in many other formulations.  The replacement product will probably be ready to ship next week. We just want to watch it in the bottles to ensure we don’t have more problems. Thank you so much for your patience and communication while we worked through this. We take it very seriously. If there is anything we can do to “make things right” please just ask!

Here is what we can do:

We have lots of plastic sprayer bottles and will happily pop one in the mail.  Because of the watery texture, it sprays without clogging perfectly.  This will let you spray away on arms and decollete for great glowing skin for the holidays.  Plus, we now have our newer product called Vivify shipping.  It is the same key ingredient, but a smaller molecular weight of sodium hyaluronate which helps it penetrate faster and deeper.  You can have this new product at no charge or a replacement.  All you need to do is shoot us an email or text with your email and shipping information and we will get both a sprayer and replacement of either Hydro Primer or Vivify out pronto tonto!  Just make sure we know which one you would like.

Botanicals the New Trend? Old news for Queen Bee customers.

Hello Lavender Bathtime Fizzballs!

904173_655797081140152_5911165080943197919_o-300x200Since  last summer, the Queen has been working out a way to help a young girl in Boulder create a fizzing bath ball bizzness.  Lauren Wilson will charm you with her energy, thought provoking smarts and her concern for the environment.  (She might also be a dog whisperer.)

She worked through all the match to ensure they would be profitable, bought an automated pneumatic machine to make them consistent. We created a list of supplies and suppliers that make great products to ensure quality.  Queen Bee has matched her start up expenses and is going to do her online sales for now.  She plans to do farmers markets and sell them for school fundraising activities.
